Who are you ?
• You've always wanted to speak French or to refresh the little French you've learnt at school.
• You went to France and enjoyed it… but you found it difficult to ask for a baguette at the bakery.
• You intend to visit, live or work in a French speaking country and you would like to be able to communicate with the locals…
The courses
There are 5 levels of beginners classes, from Beginners 1 to Beginners 5, thus 5 terms to complete the whole level.
Each session is 20 hours long, organised over 10 weeks of classes. Classes are 2 hours long and usually take place in the evening from 6.00 to 8.00pm (possible daytime classes depending on enrolments). Each 20 hours session is $200. The books used are Connexions 1 ($65 for the set & CD).
You have also to become a member of the Alliance ($35/year). The subscription enables you to borrow any books, magazines, DVDs or CDs from the French Library, and as well to take part in Alliance Française events.
What you learn
Classes will enable you to communicate in French even from a very basic level. In the Beginners classes, you will be able to (based on Connexions 1):
Beginner 1 : make contact with someone, use greetings, apologize, introduce yourself, talk about yourself and your likes and dislikes, talk about what you own…
Beginner 2 : ask someone to do something, invite someone, accept / refuse an invite, ask for the time and date, make an appointment…
Beginner 3 : give a positive / negative point of view, ask for prices, develop a sense of space, ask for and indicate a direction…
Beginner 4 : give an order / advice, forbid something, express the obligation, describe a place, express the cause.
Beginner 5 : Describe your day… develop a sense of time, agree or disagree, compare things, describe and characterize someone, talk about the future, understand the weather forecast…
