A worldwide network
The Alliance Française is a worldwide, non-profit network of associations dedicated to promote French language and culture abroad. The first Alliance was founded in Paris in 1883.
There are now 1081 Alliances Françaises in 135 countries including 11 in New Zealand, teaching 400,000 students of French at all levels.
The Alliance Française de Christchurch is not just a centre for French language, but also for French culture. Although some of our events are in French, most are bilingual. Members do not have to be fluent in French to take advantage of our various activities.
What does the Alliance Française de Christchurch offer?
Social and cultural events
Regular cultural events are organised and we promote French language and culture through conferences, talks, meetings with artists, concerts…
Special events such as Bastille Day, Music Day and the annual Beaujolais Nouveau.
Regular social events (, breakfasts "à la Française", conversation, quiz evenings…) enable Francophones and Francophiles to meet.
For books lovers, there is a monthly book club meeting to talk about a book they have read (in French bien sûr!).
French movies galore with the monthly special screening at the Metro Gold Cinema with wine and cheese and the French Library lending movies to members.
Newsletter: our monthly bilingual newsletter includes a programme of forthcoming activities; regular columns on books, films and travel and articles on French activities in Christchurch.
French classes
Regular French classes from toddlers to adults
French classes are offered for all levels and ages (from 1 y.o onwards) all year round. The classes are taught by qualified native teachers and give the opportunity to learn and practise a contemporary and useful French in a small group or on a one on one basis.
These classes usually take place in our premises but can be held as well outside the Alliance.

The Alliance Française is an examination centre for the DELF and DALF exams recognized by the French Ministry of Education and worldwide.
Our multimedia French library
The French Library is situated in the Alliance premises and is open to anyone in New Zealand. It offers a great variety of books, DVDs, CDs, magazines, videos, comics, self teaching methods and reference books about France. All resources are available on free loan provided you become a member of the Alliance de Christchurch.
